No matter where we’re at in our spiritual path, we’ve all heard the saying, “be present”. But what does that actually mean? All of us, no matter who you are, look back on our lives, think of things we should have said, things we should have done, people we should have avoided and people we should have got to know better.
The only thing that makes those past memories a pleasant reflection is being aware of our thoughts and actions in the present moment. It doesn’t mean that you always have to say or do the right things. It just means that you have to be aware of your current behaviors. Are you acting with compassion, tolerance and a love for everyone and every situation you come across? It’s hard I know. In doing reads, one of the things that stand out most is people really have a hard time letting things go. Just know that once and unpleasant act happens, holding on to it serves no purpose but to steal you time and energy.
The same for the future. Anything that occurs in the future is a direct consequence of the things you do now, in this present moment. If you want to be a great piano player, you have to practice now, in this present moment. If you want that promotion at work, you have to do things now that make you stand out from the crowd.
This is only to say that both the past and the future are direct consequences of what we are doing now, at this present moment. In thinking of it this way, there is no past or future, there’s only now. So be in the “Now”.
